The Gold Coach Fired: "Don't Care About the Supporters"

Ice hockey coach Robert Ohlsson led Skellefteå to the SM gold in the spring. Now he gets fired – this shortly after the coach made a controversial statement about the club's fans. I don't care about the supporters, said Ohlsson.

After four straight losses and seven losses in the last nine SHL matches for the reigning champion team, Skellefteå supporters directed criticism at Robert Ohlsson, according to P4 Västerbotten. The coach himself did not care much.

I haven't heard that. I don't care about the supporters either. Supporters are something I can't influence, what they think and think. It's usually like that: When it's going well, they think you're great, and when you don't win matches, you're terrible, Ohlsson said the other day to the radio channel.

Would Have Quit

It had previously been clear that Ohlsson would not continue in the club after the current season, but on Wednesday, he was fired.

"Our joint intention was to complete one last season together, but after a comprehensive assessment, we have landed on the fact that it is better for Skellefteå AIK Hockey, both in the short and long term, to make a change now", says Daniel Fåhraeus, club director, to the website.

Ohlsson took over Skellefteå before the 2021–2022 season. He has led the Västerbotten club to the SM final in the last two seasons, and in the spring, it became gold after a win against Rögle with 4–1 in matches. The club also reached the final in the Champions Hockey League last season, but there was a loss against the Swiss Servette.

Duo Takes Over

Skellefteå has taken 25 points in 17 matches and is seventh in the table. The SHL now has a national team break for the Karjala Tournament, but when the series resumes next Thursday, an away match against Malmö awaits Skellefteå.

Then, Pierre Johnsson and Andreas Falk will be in the box – the duo will take over as coaches for the rest of the season.
