The winning goal against Columbus (2–1) gave Toronto important points in the battle for the bottom of the NHL. It was William Nylander's 15th goal in overtime, the most of any Toronto player all-time, and he passed Mats Sundin and current teammate Auston Matthews.
"We both had opportunities in overtime. I mean, he could have scored today too," Nylander said of Matthews, according to nhl.com.
There were 20 seconds left in overtime when Nylander scored the decisive goal with a wrist shot off the club hand side of Columbus goalie Jet Greaves. Oliver Ekman-Larsson received an assist on the goal.
Nylander also provided an assist, for Easton Cowan's 1–1 goal in the third period that took the game into overtime.
The victory was Toronto's only second in nine games and the Maple Leafs moved past Buffalo at the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
