Scoring King William Nylander scored two goals and an assist when his Toronto faced last year's champions Florida in the first quarterfinal of the Stanley Cup.

It only took a little over 30 seconds before William Nylander scored. A well-directed shot from the right technical circle gave Toronto 1–0, which he shortly thereafter followed up with another goal. The latter after an assist by his fellow countryman Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

When we came out on the ice, we got a couple of good scoring opportunities that we could take advantage of, which was nice for us. Now we're focusing on the next match, says Nylander to reporters after the match.

Florida was hot on the heels the entire match but never quite caught up. The home team Toronto won with 5–4, including another effort by Nylander in the form of an assist, and thus leads the match series with 1–0.

The teams will meet again already on Wednesday, also on Toronto's home ice.

Winnipeg–Dallas: 0–0 (The first match is played the night of May 8)

Vegas–Edmonton: 0–0 (The first match is played the night of May 7)

Florida–Toronto: 0–1

Washington–Carolina: 0–0 (The first match is played the night of May 7)
