"Racism has no place in our sport, or anywhere else in society," the league wrote.

Sunderland's Lutsharel Geertruida was the target of the challenge that led to play being stopped in the second half at St James' Park.

British police launched an investigation in February after four players - over the course of a weekend - were subjected to racism.

Sunderland won the match 2-1 after a late goal by Brian Brobbey. Anthony Elanga and Melker Ellborg, both selected in the Swedish squad for the World Cup play-off, started for their clubs Newcastle and Sunderland respectively.
