Greenland Airport Closure Causes Major Delays in Nuuk

All international departures from the airport in the Greenlandic capital Nuuk have been temporarily suspended. Instead, travelers are forced to go to two other airports to be able to leave the island. The stop is due to problems in the security check, and not a reported American influence campaign on the island.

Less than a year after Nuuk's new runway opened, traffic is now being closed because those who are to work in security checks have not received sufficient training.

Flights from Denmark and the rest of the world can land, but all international flights from Nuuk are temporarily stopped, according to the newspaper Sermitsiaq. However, personnel from Denmark will be flown in during Wednesday so that the airport can function as usual from Thursday.

Those who are to travel abroad from Nuuk must until then first go to Kangerlussuaq or Narsarsuaq to go through a security check. These places are located, according to DR, 320 and 450 kilometers from Nuuk, and the detour will mean significant delays for those affected.

The stop, which has received great attention, has nothing to do with Danish Radio's revelation on Wednesday morning that American citizens are conducting influence campaigns on the island.

The new runway with capacity for larger aircraft was inaugurated in November last year to avoid the need for flights to Greenland to make a stopover in Iceland.
