The son of the Norwegian Crown Princess is suspected of violent crimes over the past weekend, including threats with a knife, assault and violation of a restraining order, reports the news agency NTB.

The information about the new crimes comes the day before the high-profile trial in which he is due to face several counts, including rape and assault.

Andreas Kruszewski - a police attorney, roughly equivalent to a prosecutor - said, according to Norwegian media, that Borg Høiby was arrested on Sunday, but did not want to give any more information on Monday. According to VG, the crimes were committed on Sunday night.

Late Monday, Borg Høiby's lawyers had not yet said whether they intend to appeal the detention, or how the "bonus prince" will respond to the charges. According to Norwegian media, he was examined at a hospital on Sunday evening ahead of the detention period.

Danger of new crimes

The new allegations are reported by several media outlets to concern the so-called "Frogner Woman", Borg Høiby's former girlfriend and one of the plaintiffs in the upcoming trial, against whom he has been granted a restraining order. The woman's lawyer, Mette Yvonne Larsen, declined to comment to Norwegian media.

The 29-year-old "bonus prince" was not present at the detention hearing, which NRK describes as primarily a technical hearing. A statement says he is being detained because there is reasonable basis for the suspicions and that the court shares the police assessment that the risk of Borg Høiby committing new crimes is "very likely".

Borg Høiby will now be held in custody until March 2.

Trial for seven weeks

In the trial against Marius Borg Høiby, which begins in Oslo District Court on Tuesday, he is, according to Norwegian media, charged with 38 counts. The trial is expected to last just under seven weeks, tentatively until March 19.

The case has shaken the Norwegian royal family to its core. It began to unfold when police received a report of violence at an address in Frogner, Oslo, in August 2024. Borg Høiby was briefly arrested as a suspect for the first time. Since then, a number of other criminal charges have emerged against him. Borg Høiby has admitted to some of the incidents, but denies rape, among other allegations.

Marius Borg Høiby is 29 years old and the son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit from a previous relationship. Mette-Marit married Crown Prince Haakon in 2001.

Borg Høiby was first arrested in August 2024. A year later, the indictment against him was presented, which included 32 charges, including rape and assault in a close relationship. Six more charges were added in January this year. There are seven plaintiffs, six of them women.

Høiby was arrested again on Sunday, February 1, two days before the scheduled start of the trial, for, among other things, assault and knife threats.

Borg Høiby faces up to 16 years in prison.
