The Norwegian cross-country star Tiril Udnes Weng is still plagued by illnesses – and now she gives up. It will most likely be no World Championship in Trondheim in March for the 28-year-old.

Tiril Udnes Weng realizes that she will not make it to the World Championship on home soil later this winter. She tells NRK. Weng is struggling with glandular fever and has only competed in three World Cup events this season.

I had hoped to reach the Norwegian Championships to qualify for the World Championship. But now I've been sick for four weeks and am still sick. I wouldn't have had a chance to get in shape for the World Championship anyway, she says.

Norway's national team coach Sjur Ole Svarstad tells NTB:

She's struggling a lot with streptococcal infections and glandular fever, so we simply don't know when she'll be back. It's very sad.

Tiril Udnes Weng doesn't even know if she'll be present during the World Championship.

I can barely think about it. I don't think I'll be in Trondheim. It's terrible to miss the party, and I'd like to be there to support my teammates. But I don't know.

Udnes Weng won the World Cup overall as recently as 2023.
