South Korean customs and coast guard found a total of 57 packages of cocaine on the Norwegian-flagged vessel M/V Lunita in the port city of Gangneung on the east coast. The Norwegian shipping company JJ Ugland confirms the incident.
"The authorities found large quantities of cocaine hidden on board. An investigation is underway and it is still unclear how the drugs got on board our vessel. We are cooperating with the relevant authorities to assist in the investigation," the shipping company writes in a press release.
The vessel had sailed from Mexico via Ecuador, Panama, and China. The authorities struck after a tip from the American FBI.
The previous largest drug seizure in South Korea was made in 2021 and was 404 kilos of methamphetamine, according to the customs.
