Norwegian double murderer Stig Millehaugen has been found dead in his cell at Kongsvinger Prison, Norwegian police say. He was 56 years old.

The cause of death has not been given. According to the police, an autopsy and an investigation will be carried out, during which the cell will be examined and people who have been in contact with Millehaugen will be questioned.

Stig Millehaugen was dubbed "Norway's most dangerous man" and spent a large part of his adult life behind bars, convicted of, among other things, double murder and armed robbery. He carried out several high-profile escapes and escape attempts.

Last spring, Millehaugen was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a man in Oslo while on leave. Those suspicions still persisted, and Millehaugen denied any involvement.
