On Saturday night, it was announced that the president of the International Football Association Board (FIFA), Gianni Infantino, is scrapping the proposal to sell shares in, among other things, the World Cup to private investors.
"Two weeks ago we were in the US and Gianni Infantino had broad support from virtually every country except Norway. Now we have reached a turning point," says Lise Klaveness in an interview with NRK.
The Swiss Infantino is currently the only candidate ahead of the congress in March and, before the controversial World Cup plan, had the support of nearly 200 of FIFA's 211 member associations.
Klaveness wants to wait for a board meeting before making a statement about Norway's position on Infantino's continuation as FIFA boss.
I don't think you need to stop the pressure if it turns out that after the board meeting next week we go out and say that we don't have confidence, which we didn't have in the last election either.
The Norwegian federation chair has for many years been strongly critical of how FIFA has been run.
We have been working for quite a few years to make this also about good governance and not just "Game of Thrones" and power struggles, Klaveness tells NRK.
