In the wake of King Harald's death, changes are being made to the apanage.

"The abdication means that a new privilege is established for the royal family," says the budget proposal from the Norwegian Ministry of Digitalisation and Public Administration, which is responsible for appropriations for the royal family.

The proposed 2027 budget for the royal couple is, however, significantly larger than this year's. Nearly 31 million Norwegian kroner (about $3 million) is proposed for King Haakon and Queen Mette-Marit - almost double the amount granted to King Harald and Queen Sonja in 2026.

The apanage is the annual grant paid to cover the royals' personal expenses for representation and official duties.
