The match was played on neutral ground in Hungarian Debrecen, with a special setting and only a few thousand spectators.

Israeli media have reacted to what was perceived as Palestinian-friendly statements from Norwegian players before the match. From the Israeli fans, there was loud booing towards the Norwegians both after the warm-up and during the Norwegian national anthem.

Before the match, Norway's national team captain Ståle Solbakken was asked about a possible boycott of the match due to the ongoing war in Gaza.

According to my and the association's opinion, a boycott from Norway will not help anyone. That discussion is clear. Then I understand that someone who has been affected would see it as a very strong signal and a powerful tool, but we have decided this, said Solbakken.

Norway started the World Championship qualification with a 5–0 win away against Moldova last weekend and has six points.

In the same group, Italy and Estonia are also playing.
