It is Aftonbladet that reports on the 38-year-old's plans. According to Northug, who in December 2018 announced that he was ending his career in the Norwegian national team, there are several countries interested in his services.
Among them are Liechtenstein, Estonia, Mexico, and Austria, with the latter being the most interesting. According to TV2's information, hard work is being done to explore the possibilities of dual citizenship for the Norwegian.
Vegard Bitnes, Norwegian national team manager for the Austrian cross-country skiing team, tells TV2 that he has been reached by the information and has been in contact with Northug.
We look forward to seeing if he might come to Austria. I think it would increase interest in cross-country skiing in the country. I absolutely think it's possible.
Petter Northug has won two Olympic Games gold medals and thirteen World Championship gold medals.
Since ending his career in the Norwegian national team, Northug has continued with, among other things, long-distance skiing, with the main ambition of winning Vasaloppet. In this year's Vasaloppet, he finished 18th.
