The total solar eclipse lasted less than two minutes in the village of Lodoso in the province of Burgos in the autonomous region of Castile, an AFP journalist reports.
Thousands of spectators, wearing special glasses to protect their eyes, were there to witness the phenomenon.
The best vantage points for viewing the total solar eclipse have been set up along a strip of land in northern and central Spain. According to the Interior Ministry, 350 official viewing points have been set up, AP reports.
Hotel bookings have been high along the eclipse's path, including in the cities of A Coruña, Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela. Authorities estimated that up to half a million visitors would be in the affected areas ahead of the eclipse.
The total solar eclipse could also be seen in eastern Greenland, western Iceland and the northwestern corner of Portugal.
Most of Europe was able to see a partial solar eclipse.
