North Korea fired an "unidentified projectile" from its west coast on Tuesday, South Korea's military said, without providing any further information.
As recently as April, the closed country on the Korean Peninsula fired several ballistic missiles into the Sea of Japan.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been investing in expanding the country's missile arsenal for several years.
