North Korea Criticizes Trump's Golden Dome Air Defense Plan

Donald Trump's plans for the USA's future air defense – the "golden dome" – do not go down well in North Korea. The regime in the closed dictatorship claims that they could lead to nuclear war in space.

The American president has repeatedly spoken about his desire to build an air defense system inspired by the so-called "Iron Dome".

Last week, Trump announced several details about the project, including that he wants to invest 175 billion dollars and that the system will be fully operational by the end of Trump's term, in early 2029.

If the system – primarily intended to deflect ballistic missiles – becomes a reality, it would be the first time the USA places weapons in space.

Warning of space war

From Pyongyang's perspective, they do not view Trump's prestige project favorably.

In a statement published via the state news agency KCNA on Tuesday, North Korea's Foreign Ministry slammed the military initiative as a "very dangerous threat" to the security of "nuclear-armed states' security".

"The USA's plan to build new robot systems is the starting point for starting a new global arms race regarding nuclear and space weapons by stimulating security concerns among nuclear-armed states and turning outer space into a possible battlefield, it further states.

Still in the concept stage

Congress's budget office estimated earlier this month that just the space-based part, admittedly the most expensive, may cost up to 542 billion dollars over 20 years.

The golden dome is still only in the concept stage and the Pentagon has not yet determined what capacity the system will have. The USA already has advanced air defense systems such as Patriot and satellites that can detect threats.
