"Protecting Norrlandsströmming contributes to strengthening Swedish food production. It is important for preserving jobs and promoting Swedish origin," says Minister of Rural Affairs Peter Kullgren (KD) in a press release from the government.
The protected designation means that the products must be manufactured according to certain regulations. Norrlandsströmming consists of the wild-caught fish Clupea harengus from the Bothnian Sea and the Gulf of Bothnia. According to the Swedish Board of Agriculture, it must "be caught with passive gear and be landed and sorted within 24 hours".
