Red Bull's Max Verstappen climbed 17 positions. But it was McLaren driver Lando Norris who won Sunday's race in Brazil, and the Englishman is now closing in on his first individual Formula 1 world title.

Even though World Championship third-place Max Verstappen started the Brazilian GP race from the pits, the Dutchman managed to make it all the way to the lead with 16 laps to go.

The reigning champion, however, had one tire change left, but ultimately grabbed third place in the final laps and was very close to overtaking Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli.

"To finish on the podium, starting from the pits, was not something I expected. Incredible result for us, very happy about it. I am very proud of our team," said Verstappen after the race.

Lando Norris won from the best starting position.

The victory saw the 25-year-old extend his lead in the drivers' championship to 24 points over second-placed driver and teammate Oscar Piastri. Third-placed Max Verstappen has a 49-point lead over Norris.

"McLaren are doing an incredible job and giving me an incredible car. I don't think we were the fastest out on the track today, but I'm happy we won," said Norris, who won his second straight race.

Piastri had an even tougher day. The Australian picked up a ten-second penalty after a collision with Antonelli and he slipped to fifth place.

There are three races remaining in the World Championship series.
