"This year we celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Nobel Prize and in connection with that it is gratifying to be able to increase the prize money by one million," says Hanna Stjärne, CEO of the Nobel Foundation, in a press release.
"By increasing the prize money, we safeguard the long-term significance of the Nobel Prize and ensure that the financial component of the prize retains its value over time," she continues.
In 1901, when the first Nobel Prizes were awarded, the prize money per category was just over 150,000 kronor. The amount has been adjusted several times over the past 15 years. In 2012, it was reduced from ten to eight million, and since then the amount has been increased on three occasions.
The 2026 Nobel Prizes will be announced on October 5-12.
