Human rights activist and Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi has been transferred to a prison in the northern Iranian city of Zanjan. Mohammadi's family is concerned for her health.

The transfer came without warning from Iranian authorities and followed a newly imposed prison sentence of over seven years on charges including participating in illegal gatherings and propaganda.

Mohammadi recently ended a short hunger strike. The Norwegian Nobel Committee is reacting sharply to reports of "physical abuse and life-threatening treatment."

The 53-year-old was arrested in December at a funeral. By then, she had already spent much of the past ten years in an Iranian prison.

She was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023 for her fight for human rights.
