Just hours before last year’s Peace Prize winner was announced, large sums of money were bet on María Corina Machado, who was not among the predicted winners, on the prediction market Polymarket.

It is very likely that someone knew she would receive the prize, says Kristian Berg Harpviken, head of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, to NTB.

According to the institute, it was likely a case of digital espionage. Since then, “a lot of resources” have been invested in measures to prevent a recurrence.

"We are doing a lot of things to prevent it from happening again. But we can't say much about the details, because then we would make ourselves vulnerable again," says Harpviken.

This year’s award winner will be announced at 11 a.m. on Friday.
