The people of Ecuador have spoken. A clear majority voted no in the referendum on US military bases in the country, with 75 percent of the votes counted. The president now promises to respect the election results.

President Daniel Noboa had plans to re-establish US military bases in Ecuador and reform the country's constitution. That won't happen after voters rejected the proposals in Sunday's referendum.

"We respect the will of the Ecuadorian people," Noboa said after the preliminary election results were presented.

The result is unexpected. Opinion polls ahead of the election showed that it would go the way of the popular president, who recently secured his second term in office.
