The announcement comes two days before the opening of the games in Milan and Cortina.
ICE - which is the agency that implements US measures against illegal immigration - will only act as part of the American diplomatic mission.
“They are not operational agents and have no executive function,” the Minister of the Interior says.
The possible presence of ICE agents during the games has caused outrage and led Milan's mayor, Giuseppe Sala, to say they are not welcome in the city.
The Minister of the Interior calls the outrage "completely unfounded."
