COVID, doping control, transportation. An exhausted Sara Hector missed the spontaneous celebration when her Olympic gold medal from Beijing was at its freshest. She will make up for it in Cortina.

A little over two hours after sharing silver in the giant slalom with Norwegian Thea Louise Stjernesund, Hector was driven from the alpine facility in Tofane.

Then she had arranged an award ceremony, lots of interviews, a press conference and a photo shoot.

It's wasn't until the medal celebration at Hotel Menardi in Cortina that she was finally able to meet her mother and father, her boyfriend and many friends and acquaintances.

There was no time for that four years ago, when the pandemic still had its grip on humanity. Also, Hector was far too tired at the time to deal with the commotion surrounding the gold.

When I got back from the doping control, it was nine o'clock and I hadn't eaten all day because I was so nervous.

So I was completely exhausted. I hadn't slept much; I was, like, completely exhausted. There was no way I would be able to celebrate at all. But now I'm going to make up for it. I'm going to enjoy it, says Sara Hector.
