After the torrential rains in September last year, the Swedish Transport Administration opened the door for road associations that do not receive government subsidies to apply for financial assistance to repair roads.

The Swedish Transport Administration tells TT that 28 such associations have applied, of which four have been awarded grants. 24 have been rejected because they did not meet the requirements.

Staffan Eriksson, head of the unit for private roads at the Swedish Transport Administration, tells TT that the decision to open the application process was made in anticipation of a possible political change to the regulations.

"If it had been extensive enough or critical enough, perhaps there would have been a change from a political perspective," he says.
