Nine people are reported to have been killed in Gaza, when Israeli forces opened fire on a bus. At the same time, the area's health authority announces that a total of over 68,000 Palestinians have been killed since Hamas' terror attack on Israel.

The civil defense could salvage the bodies of nine people, says Mahmud Bassal, spokesperson for Gaza's civil defense, which is under Hamas rule, to AFP.

According to Bassal, the bus was transporting internally displaced persons when it was fired upon east of Zeitun in Gaza City on Friday.

Israel's military claims that the bus crossed the so-called yellow line, the border behind which the country's soldiers have withdrawn in accordance with the first phase of the prevailing American peace plan. The military claims that warning shots were fired at the "suspected vehicle" and that it was seen as a threat when it did not stop.

In parallel, it is announced that the remains of 15 Palestinians who were held prisoner by Israel have been returned to Gaza.

On Saturday afternoon, the health authority in the Hamas-controlled strip also reports that the number of Palestinians who have been killed since October 7, 2023, now exceeds 68,000.

According to the authority, whose statistics are considered credible by the UN and a number of independent experts, the death toll has continued to rise since the ceasefire came into force, which is mainly due to the fact that remains have been found under the rubble in the largely bombed-out area with the help of search efforts.
