Nina Koppang Returns to Sweden’s Squad for the European Handball Championship After Mental Health Break

Nina Koppang took a break from handball earlier this year to focus on her mental health. Now she has been selected for the European Championship and is ready to return to the national team.

Koppang won her fourth championship with Blågult at the end of last year's World Cup. Just a month later, she paused her career, only to return to Sävehof this fall.

National team coach Tomas Axnér, who also coached Koppang in Esbjerg, Denmark, before her break, has been in close contact with the 24-year-old right-back.

It has been my intention not to push the process, but to make the decision quite close to the championship. Then we landed on this - that Nina can be involved and thinks it will be fun to be involved, says Axnér in connection with the squad announcement.

According to Tomas Axnér, it is Nina Koppang's attacking ability that has earned her a place, while Isabel van Kerkvoorde has been left out of the European Championship squad.

It is pleasing and fun that she is back. She can spice up our attacking game above all. A player who, with her physique and explosiveness, can also create space and room for other players. We think that could be important for us, he says.

Sweden struggled at the World Cup a year ago, finishing only 15th despite going into the tournament hoping to win a medal.

The national team is now undergoing a major generational change. Jamina Roberts, Nathalie Hagman and Anna Lagerquist have all retired since the last championship, and Axnér does not currently see Sweden as one of Europe's six best teams on paper.

A key match will be the European Championship opener against Germany, who won silver at last year's World Cup.

A really tough opponent, but also a door opener if they manage to win that match, says Axnér.

He has selected six championship debutants in total. Goalkeeper Stina Littorin, centre-backs Emma Olsson and Isabelle Rydén, left-backs Charité Mumbongo and Hanna Lundvall, and centre-back Emma Wahlström will all be making their European Championship debuts.
