Nightmare minutes knocked out Potter in his debut

Graham Potter was on his way to victory in his debut as West Ham coach, but five nightmare minutes changed everything. Then Aston Villa – with Swedish national team player Robin Olsen in goal – turned a 0–1 deficit into a 2–1 victory in the FA Cup.

The former Östersund coach Graham Potter – who was sacked as Chelsea coach in April 2023 – was confirmed as coach for Premier League club West Ham on Thursday.

On Friday evening, Aston Villa awaited on away ground in the third round of the FA Cup, and for a long time it looked like Potter would start with a win.

In the ninth minute, Lucas Paquetá scored the leading goal behind Robin Olsen in the Aston Villa goal.

For Olsen, it was the first start of the season in the club team. Prior to that, it had only been a 45-minute substitute appearance for Olsen – one half – against Chelsea in the Premier League at the beginning of December.

West Ham's lead in the FA Cup match at Villa Park in Birmingham held for over an hour.

In the 71st minute, Amadou Onana managed to score the equalizer in a tangled situation in front of West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabiański. Five minutes later, the turnaround was complete when Morgan Rogers finished off a lightning-fast counterattack.

In Friday evening's other FA Cup match, Wycombe – normally in the third division One League – knocked out Championship club Portsmouth 2–0 at home.
