After being at the top of the table for much of the season, Leksand hit their stride late and won six of seven games in the SHL.
But away at Malmö, they were blown away. They conceded three goals in the first period and never recovered.
There is still a slim chance for Leksand to make it. This would require the team to take three points against Rögle in the last round while Linköping loses in regular time to Örebro. In addition, Leksand must also make up 14 goals on Linköping in the goal-difference tiebreak between the teams.
HV71 had already qualified for the playoffs and will be Leksand's opponents in the nervy matches to stay in the top league.
Elsewhere, Skellefteå secured the series victory with a 5-2 win over Linköping.
