At least six people have been killed, according to local residents, after the Nigerian air force mistakenly attacked them, instead of a group of criminals who had attacked police officers in a nearby village.
Beyond the eyewitness accounts collected by the news agency AFP, human rights organization Amnesty International states that several people were killed in the incident, and demands in a statement an "impartial, transparent, and immediate investigation".
As recently as January, at least 16 people were killed in a similar accident, when Nigeria's military mistook local residents for criminal gangs.
Several civilians were also killed by airstrikes in December. In 2023, at least 80 civilians were killed in a drone attack.
Nigeria's armed forces have been fighting criminal gangs that plunder villages and kill or kidnap residents in northwestern and central Nigeria for several years.
