Shortly after Hegseth’s statement, AFP sources at the Pentagon, the US defense headquarters, said the execution would be broadcast live.
Army psychiatrist Nidal Hasan was sentenced to death in 2013 for the 2009 massacre at Fort Hood in Texas, when he shot and killed 13 people and injured 31.
Earlier this week, President Donald Trump, on Hegseth’s advice, approved the execution by firing squad, after a military court had previously ruled that Hasan should be executed by lethal injection.
The execution, scheduled for December 3, will be the first carried out by the US military since 1961, according to AFP.
