Bäckström returned to the Gävle club for the past season after a nearly 20-year NHL career, with his 2018 Stanley Cup title with Washington the big highlight.
Now his contract with Brynäs is rolling forward into another season, but the club says it is uncertain whether the center will play. Bäckström has suffered injuries during the spring that require rehabilitation.
"There is no set timeframe for this, but at the same time we, of course, take responsibility for building an effective squad where Nicklas can be seen as a bonus next season," says sports director Johan Alcén.
