NHL Stars Zibanejad and Backlund Set for World Championship in Stockholm

Mika Zibanejad and Mikael Backlund are both clear for play in the World Championship in ice hockey on home ground in Stockholm in May. I'm thrilled and this is super cool, says New York Rangers star Zibanejad on Tre Kronor's X-account.

Zibanejad was part of the team that won the World Championship gold with Tre Kronor in 2018 in Copenhagen. He has Hammarby as his parent club and played one season in AIK as a junior before breaking through in Djurgården.

Now it's time for World Championship games on home soil in Stockholm.

A chance and a dream that really comes true, getting to play in front of friends and family and all of you who come and watch the matches. Let's create magic together and make this a memory we'll never forget, says the 32-year-old.

The 2012–2013 season saw him establish himself in the NHL in Ottawa, and since 2016–2017, he has been playing for New York Rangers.

Zibanejad was the first NHL reinforcement that the national team officially confirmed.

Later on Thursday, it was also clear that Calgary's team captain Mikael Backlund, who was part of Tre Kronor's latest World Championship gold, in Denmark 2018, would participate.

The 36-year-old veteran center, who was dropped from Sweden's team when the star-studded Four Nations was played earlier this year, is looking forward to playing in front of the home crowd at Avicii arena, formerly Globen.

I hope it'll be a big yellow wall that supports us all the way to our big goal, the World Championship gold, says Backlund in a video clip on Tre Kronor's X-account.

His teammate Rasmus Andersson, defenseman, as well as Nashville star Filip Forsberg, forward, have also given the thumbs up for World Championship games with Sweden.

The World Championship will be played in Stockholm and Herning, Denmark, starting on May 9. Sweden will face Slovakia in their opening match and play all their games in Stockholm.
