Reigning champions Carolina will open this year's NHL season with a home game against Florida on September 29. The last, and only time, the NHL started so early was the 2007–2008 season.
The regular season is also being extended by two games, from 82 to 84. According to a press release from the league, the regular season is being expanded to achieve a more even playing schedule between the divisions.
