California's governor Gavin Newsom is considering running in the US presidential election 2028, reports CBS News.

The Democrat will make a decision after next year's midterm elections, he says in "CBS News Sunday Morning". When asked if he is considering a bid for the White House, he replies that "I would be lying if I said anything else".

I would just be lying. And I can't do that.

Newsom is one of President Donald Trump's most prominent critics. His term as Governor of California ends in January 2027, and since he has already served two terms, he cannot run for re-election.

The 58-year-old Newsom has, among other things, challenged Trump on the government's decision to send the National Guard to cities in California and Oregon. He has also directed sharp criticism at the immigration authority ICE's expanded powers during the Trump administration.
