Newly discovered plant named after Lionel Messi grows in the Peruvian Andes

Football star Lionel Messi has a newly discovered plant named after him.

The endangered plant, named Salvia messii, can grow up to 1.5 meters tall. It grows at high altitudes in the Andes in central and southern Peru, The New York Times reports.

The plant's light blue and white flowers are reminiscent of the colors of Argentina’s national team jersey. Lionel Messi, 39, was recently celebrated back home in Argentina after playing his 208th and final international match.
