In a statement from the Premier League club, Howe thanks the "football family for your messages and your support".
Howe will miss the home game against Crystal Palace on Wednesday and the away game against Aston Villa on Saturday. He was already absent in the win against Manchester United on Sunday (4–1), but the club had not yet announced that he had been struck by pneumonia.
Jason Tindall and Graeme Jones will lead the team for the time being. Tindall says he has had "minimal contact" with Howe, just a few text messages.
The most important thing for him now is to rest and rehabilitate and not worry about anything else than getting restored as soon as possible, says Tindall.
If they win against Crystal Palace, Newcastle will pass Nottingham and move up to third place in the Premier League table.
