In the last minute, the silly season's big football rumor became a reality – despite Newcastle having resisted all summer and not wanting to sell Alexander Isak to Liverpool.
Isak has made himself unpopular in Newcastle this summer by going on strike to get a move. And when the deal was finalized late on Monday evening, Newcastle was content with two sentences to tell about the transfer on the website:
"Newcastle United can announce the sale of striker Alexander Isak to Liverpool for a significant British record transfer sum. The Swedish national team player joined the 'Magpies' from Real Sociedad in 2022 and made 109 appearances in all competitions," the club writes.
Newcastle is not as stingy with words when the club, in another article on the website, tells that Yoane Wissa has been recruited from Brentford.
"Yoane is a player we have admired for a while and we are happy to have him on board," says Newcastle's coach Eddie Howe and describes Wissa as a goal scorer and as a player who always does the job for his team.
"He makes us stronger immediately," says Howe.
Wissa will have number 9 in Newcastle and is intended to fill part of the void after Isak. On the last day of the transfer window, Wissa went out in social media and appealed to Brentford to be sold.
