All streets, highways and bridges in New York City will be closed to all non-essential motorized or electric vehicles, Mayor Zohran Mamdani announced.

"We ask all New Yorkers to avoid all non-essential travel," he said at a press conference ahead of the shutdown, which will last from 9 p.m. Sunday to 12 a.m. Monday, local time.

The storm is approaching New York on Sunday, with more than 12 inches of wet and heavy snow expected before the end of the day. Thousands of flights have been canceled in the New York area.

"Our focus will not be on physical infrastructure but on getting homeless New Yorkers into shelters," Mamdani said.
