More than 3,000 flights were canceled in the New York area on Sunday morning, Swedish time, in anticipation of the blizzard. Mayor Zohran Mamdani has warned that this could be more extensive and dangerous than the snowstorm that hit the city in January.
"Our focus will not be on physical infrastructure but on getting homeless New Yorkers into shelters," Mamdani says.
The current weather conditions mean that wet, heavy snow is expected in combination with strong winds. Authorities fear disruptions to the power grid if power lines collapse.
In the state of Connecticut, residents are being urged to stay off the roads.
