After several trading days with wavering sentiment and large price drops in leading technology companies, confidence returned to the New York Stock Exchange again.
About 90 minutes after opening, the broad S&P 500 index had risen 0.8 percent, the Dow Jones industrial index 0.5 percent, and the technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index 1.1 percent.
The question is whether sentiment is also at the top since chip giant Nvidia submitted its quarterly report after the stock market closed.
Nvidia has had a bumpy ride in recent weeks but is up a healthy 4.2 percent for the day ahead of the report.
