Governor Kathy Hochul has commissioned the state's energy authority to invest in new nuclear power of at least 1 gigawatt. This corresponds to approximately electricity for 750,000 households and means a large reactor or several small ones.
Hochul, who has profiled herself as a nuclear power advocate, says that with the decision, she ensures that companies that want to establish themselves in New York and people who want to live there will never have to worry about access to reliable and affordable energy, the newspaper writes.
The USA has in recent years produced less nuclear energy, since more old reactors have been closed than new ones have been put into operation.
As recently as in May, US President Donald Trump signed a decree with the aim of speeding up the development of nuclear power projects, with faster licensing.
