The vote in Strasbourg confirms the agreement reached with EU member states in early December, which envisages a phase-out of Russian gas, both liquid and pipeline, with all taps to be closed by September 30, 2027.
"We are turning the page and doing it for good," said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen after the agreement.
Wednesday's approval was made with 500 votes in favor, 120 against and 32 abstentions.
However, Hungary and Slovakia have already announced that they intend to take the issue to court, as they believe it violates the right of member states to choose their own energy mix.
