The new “Maintenance” memorial in Oslo’s government district was created by artist Matias Faldbakken and consists of a massive blue steel structure that supports a mosaic of a wading bird. The mosaic is made up of more than 300,000 hand-carved stones, assembled with the help of young people and survivors.
At the new July 22 Center, the fake police uniform that Anders Behring Breivik wore to lure young people to Utøya is on display for the first time.
However, Vanessa Svebakk Bøhn, mother of the youngest victim, who was 14, reacted strongly to not being informed about the uniform in advance when the exhibition was previewed for survivors and bereaved relatives before the official opening.
The reaction was quite intense, says Vanessa Svebakk Bøhn to NRK.
She left the center without seeing the exhibition.
Merete Stamneshagen, chair of the national support group, believes that the information given to the bereaved has been sufficient. The center's director, Lena Fahre, also comments on the reactions:
"It is painful to see that there are negative reactions, and we want to have a good dialogue with the bereaved. But personally, I stand by the professional assessments that we have made," she tells NRK.
