New US sanctions against Cuba target Dirección de Inteligencia

The United States is imposing sanctions on the Cuban intelligence service Dirección de Inteligencia (DI) as Washington steps up pressure on Havana.

DI was formed in 1961, shortly after the Cuban Revolution, and is responsible for intelligence operations abroad.

In addition to the long-standing trade embargo on Cuba, the United States has recently also cut off oil supplies to the island, which is suffering from a deepening economic crisis.

US President Donald Trump has threatened to take control of the country.
