The announcement comes after the leader of the Moderates, Lars Løkke Rasmussen, the mastermind behind the government formation, presented incumbent Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) with an ultimatum on Friday.

Venstre's deputy party leader, Stephanie Lose, writes on Facebook that Frederiksen has done Løkke's bidding and sent an invitation to both Venstre and the Conservatives, and, at the same time, "the red parties are on pause".

No party or political bloc received enough votes to form a government in Denmark in the March 24 elections. Frederiksen has been tasked with exploring the possibilities of forming a government.
