New Tents Appear in Lisbon and Porto as Protests Over Portugal’s Housing Crisis Grow

Just days after police broke up protest camps in Lisbon and Porto, new tents have appeared.

Some 60 tents covered Rossio Square in central Lisbon on Wednesday. In Porto, further north, around 30 new tents were set up.

As in neighboring Spain, the Portuguese are protesting against soaring housing prices and the rising cost of living. The protests have been going on for months but have escalated in recent weeks. Earlier in November, around 25 demonstrators were injured and around a dozen arrested when riot police stormed tent camps in Lisbon and Porto.

Prime Minister Luís Montenegro announced on Tuesday that his government would meet opposition leaders to discuss the housing crisis. There were “serious problems” to tackle, he admitted at the time.
