The first day of talks between Ukraine, Russia and the United States in Abu Dhabi has been described as “productive” by the Ukrainian side. According to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, a new prisoner exchange with Russia is underway.

"We expect an exchange of prisoners of war in the near future. We must bring our prisoners home," he said in his evening speech.

The parties are meeting to end Russia's four-year war of aggression. Talks are expected to continue on Thursday.

"The work was substantive and productive, with a focus on concrete steps and practical solutions," said Ukraine's chief negotiator Rustem Umyrov in a statement on X after Wednesday's meetings.

The renewed talks are the second round of peace talks between the parties in the capital of the United Arab Emirates.

According to Umyrov, the talks include both direct negotiations between the parties and discussions in working groups on specific subject areas.

Response measures planned

The Kremlin also says that the war will continue until Kyiv agrees to Russia's terms.

Several previous diplomatic talks between the parties have failed to reach an agreement.

In the event of a possible ceasefire, Ukraine and Western partners have developed a plan in the event of Russian violations, sources told the Financial Times.

Within the first 24 hours, Ukraine must respond on its own, and if the violations continue, forces from the "coalition of the willing", which includes Sweden, will be deployed. If it escalates to an attack lasting more than 72 hours, a coordinated Western force with the US will be deployed.

Attacks in freezing cold

The latest major Russian attack in icy Ukraine risks overshadowing the chances of progress in the negotiations. Both heating and electricity were cut off for many Ukrainians on Tuesday night, when Russia attacked and the temperature in Kyiv, among other places, was -20 degrees Celsius.

The talks in Abu Dhabi were moved forward from last weekend to Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Kremlin, due to "planning problems" between the parties.
