Former Peruvian President Pedro Castillo is sentenced to eleven and a half years in prison for attempting to dissolve Congress and rule by decree in December 2022.

He resorted to the strategy in the face of the threat of impeachment by the opposition-dominated parliament. But he was ousted the same day and has been in detention ever since, awaiting trial.

The verdict comes the day after another former president, Martín Vizcarra, who governed the country from 2018 to 2020, was sentenced to 14 years in prison for accepting bribes from construction companies during his time as governor a few years earlier.

Two more presidents are already in prison: Alejandro Toledo (2001–2006) and Ollanta Humala (2011–2016).
