A new prime minister has been appointed in Tanzania after the violent and heavily contested election in late October, Reuters reports.

The country's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has appointed Mwigulu Nchemba and parliament is expected to approve him later on Thursday.

Over a hundred people have been detained and accused of treason following the protests and unrest that broke out in Tanzania in connection with the election - where Suluhu Hassan is alleged to have received 98 percent of the vote according to the electoral commission.
