Ine Eriksen Søreide was elected the new leader of the Norwegian Conservative Party at the party's national conference on Saturday. She takes over from Erna Solberg, who had held the position for 22 years.

Søreide, 49, was elected by acclamation and received a standing ovation. She has a background as the leader of the party's youth wing, and her election was expected after other candidates withdrew.

Erna Solberg announced last fall that she was resigning, following Høyre's poor election results.

Henrik Asheim, 42, was elected deputy party leader, also with a background in the youth wing.
